In order to be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits you must have worked and paid in work related taxes consistently for at least 5 of the 10 years preceding your date of disability. If you meet that requirement then you are “insured” and able to pursue a claim for SSD benefits. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a poverty based program. To be eligible to pursue SSI you must have limited income and assets. Additionally, to be eligible for either program you must also be determined to be disabled. If you receive SSD benefits you will likely be eligible for Medicare after a waiting period. if you qualify for SSI you will be eligible for Medicaid.
